This work traces the evolution of the concept of organizational conflict over time and emphasizes that any conflict within the firm should not be regarded just as a negative fact, but rather as an opportunity to be taken advantage of. The analysis focuses on the possible causes of tension, which may be both of a technical-organizational type and/or a socio-relational kind, and demonstrates how the latter constantly influence the former.

Moreover, the paper examines the ways in which hostilities manifest themselves and, according to the consequences they produce, generate either a constructive or a destructive conflict.

Finally, particular attention is given to the managers key role in the harmonization process, in the sense that through his/her behaviour and experience, he/she might be able to relieve the generated tension.
